WHERE ARE YOU BASED?
I’m based in East London, in Hackney. We might also be shooting on location so I'll let you know directions / best way to get here once you've booked.
HOW LONG DOES A HEADSHOT SESSION TAKE?
Depending on the package booked between two to four hours. Gives us time for a coffee beforehand, and maybe a cigarette break around halfway?
HOW MANY HEADSHOTS DO YOU TAKE?
The magic of digital photography means as many as we like, within reason. Time is our only limiting factor, and I’d say I’m averaging between five and eight hundred shots. Basically, we keep shooting till we’re both happy.
FIVE TO EIGHT HUNDRED HEADSHOTS? DO I HAVE TO SIFT THROUGH THEM ALL?
This is where I can take the weight off your shoulders a little. In order to make the selection process less daunting, I present you with an edit that you can access through the website client area. This will be generally about 200 shots, all the good ones and none of the blinky ones. Your agent will thank me. And with the Superior package, you get a file sent to you with ALL shots (hi-res) taken that day, just in case you think I may have missed one.
COLOUR OR BLACK AND WHITE?
Both – see above, re: the magic of digital photography. I shoot in colour, then convert into Black and White later. So you get a version of your headshots in both formats.
STUDIO OR NATURAL LIGHT?
Natural light in the studio! I think Vermeer had it pretty much bang on. But all options are open to us… I also shoot a lot of locations if the elements allow. Alternatively, if there’s a solar eclipse or a sandstorm, then I have studio lights as backup.
DO YOU RETOUCH YOUR HEADSHOTS?
Yes, within limits. The key to good retouching is to keep it invisible - anything more and it defeats the purpose. Blemishes and the odd wrinkle can be zapped, but the whole purpose here is to make headshots that look as much like you as possible.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
First rule is, nothing that you don’t feel comfortable in. In fact that’s the only rule. Having said that, it's important to bear in mind what a difference the right clothes and preparation can make. As far as suggestions go… LADIES: Think about the eyes. Windows to the soul etc etc, and definitely the most important aspect of a portrait, so try to bring tops that compliment them. Really bright colours and anything too patterned are therefore a bit tricky, and personally I prefer darker greens, blues and reds. If you have dark hair, a white top is great. Black always works. Style-wise, bring a range of necklines and materials so we can experiment. Maybe four or five tops total? And I’m not going to pretend that make-up is my forte, but I’d say keep it natural, a little eyeliner and a gentle lip colour... GENTS: Don’t be afraid to go to a little effort… Smart works surprisingly well on film, as well as making you feel a bit punchier for the camera. So a collared shirt or two, and maybe even a jacket. White / dark T-shirts, a smart jumper, your favourite coat. Nothing too bright or it all goes a bit boy-band. Lip-salve is a good one.
WHAT’S YOUR TURNAROUND FOR HEADSHOTS?
I’ll get the images onto the website in a week. You can then peruse them at your leisure, until you’ve made your selections, which I then take 2/3 days to retouch. Once your headshots are ready, I will email you the digital files, and if you're taking the suprior package I'll send you a file of all the images. If you want them printed, I can recommend a great (and reasonable) lab. Rush jobs (2 days for final product) can be accommodated for a £50 extra fee.
WHAT DO I GET AND HOW DO I PAY?
Payment is on the day, by cash or bank transfer. For details of the different packages, have a look at my Info / Prices page. A £40 deposit is needed to confirm your booking, which is returnable as long as you cancel 10 days in advance. However you can change the date of the booking up to 3 days before.
